چکیده

We introduce BubbleSearch, a general approach for extending priority-based greedy heuristics. Following the framework recently developed by Borodin et al., we consider priority algorithms, which sequentially assign values to elements in some fixed or adaptively determined order. BubbleSearch extends priority algorithms by selectively considering additional orders near an initial good ordering. While many notions of nearness are possible, we explore algorithms based on the Kendall-tau distance (also known as the BubbleSort distance) between permutations. Our contribution is to elucidate the BubbleSearch paradigm and experimentally demonstrate its effectiveness.  2005 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Heuristic and exact algorithms for Generalized Bin Covering Problem

In this paper, we study the Generalized Bin Covering problem. For this problem an exact algorithm is introduced which can nd optimal solution for small scale instances. To nd a solution near optimal for large scale instances, a heuristic algorithm has been proposed. By computational experiments, the eciency of the heuristic algorithm is assessed.

A Simple, Adaptive Bubble Search for Improving Heuristic Solutions of the Permutation Flow Shop Scheduling Problem

In this paper we study the application of Bubble Search, an extension of priority-based greedy heuristics proposed by Lesh and Mitzenmacher (2006), as an improvement procedure for heuristic solutions of the permutation flow shop scheduling problem. We compare the performance of Bubble Search on different time scales and for different parameter settings. In particular, we demonstrate the optimal...

Designing a Meta-Heuristic Algorithm Based on a Simple Seeking Logic

Nowadays, in majority of academic contexts, it has been tried to consider the highest possible level of similarities to the real world. Hence, most of the problems have complicated structures. Traditional methods for solving almost all of the mathematical and optimization problems are inefficient. As a result, meta-heuristic algorithms have been employed increasingly during recent years. In thi...

Solving the Fixed Charge Transportation Problem by New Heuristic Approach

The fixed charge transportation problem (FCTP) is a deployment of the classical transportation problem in which a fixed cost is incurred, independent of the amount transported, along with a variable cost that is proportional to the amount shipped. Since the problem is considered as an NP-hard, the computational time grows exponentially as the size of the problem increases. In this pape...

The Probabilistic Analysis of a Greedy Satisfiability Algorithm

On input a random 3-CNF formula of clauses-to-variables ratio r3 applies repeatedly the following simple heuristic: Set to True a literal that appears in the maximum number of clauses, irrespective of their size and the number of occurrences of the negation of the literal (ties are broken randomly; 1-clauses when they appear get priority). We prove that for r3 < 3.42 this heuristic succeedswith...
